The European Parliament approved the abolition of visas for Ukraine
Ukrainians will be able to travel in the countries of
the European Union without visas presumably in June; now there are formal
procedures of the EU on the way to this.
Today, on April 6, the European Parliament approved a resolution on granting
Ukrainians the right to travel to the countries of the European Union without
visas. 521 MEPs voted for entering Ukraine into the list of third countries to
which visa liberalization will be applied, 75 MEPs voted against, 36 MEPs abstained.
This was announced at Open Ukraine forum by the
President Petro Poroshenko, who interrupted the speech of Arsenii Yatseniuk, as
reported LIGA.net correspondent.
"The news just came in: 521 Members of the
European Parliament voted for a visa-free regime with Ukraine ...
Congratulations ... to everyone who has done his best for this," he said.
Now there are some formal procedures: voting for the abolition of visas for
Ukrainians in the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER), then - in
the Council of the European Union. In May the document should be signed by the
President of the European Parliament and the Maltese Chairman of the Council of
the European Union.
The resolution on granting visa-free regime will come into force on the
20th day after the publication of the document, and in practice the citizens of
Ukraine will be able to travel to the EU without visas presumably in early June
Holders of the biometric passports will be able to visit the EU every six
months for up to 90 days.
Yesterday, on April 5, in the course of debates in the
European Parliament, the representatives of major political groups vigorously supported
establishment of visa-free regime for Ukrainians. Only Kremlin lobbyists
represented by some deputies with a background, eurosceptics and representatives
of radical right fractions argued against this.
On February 28, 2017, tripartite negotiations between
the European Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission on
the legislative resolution draft on the abolition of visa requirements for
Ukrainians were successfully held in the EU, and on March 2 in Brussels the
ambassadors of the EU Members approved the resolution on visa liberalization
On March 9, the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice
and Home Affairs of the European Parliament approved the establishment of
visa-free regime for the list of third countries including Ukraine.
